Meet Dr. Jane Heiy

Welcome! I am Jane Heiy (pronounced "hi”).  I am a Licensed Psychologist with a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology.

In my work in mental health, I am ever hopeful and confident that with work, the right therapeutic relationship, and time, huge changes can be made.  It is witnessing these transformative changes again and again that keeps me deeply invested in supporting clients to improve their wellbeing and enrichment in life.

I view my role as both a collaborator and a guide.  I believe that the people I work with know themselves best and trust the wisdom that each client brings of personal circumstances and experience.  My aim is to collaborate in developing the goals and motivation needed to create a meaningful life.  My other focus in therapy is to act as a guide, providing the reflections, encouragement, and concrete skills necessary to capitalize on one's strengths and bolster vulnerabilities.

I am grateful to be able to sit with people each day who are putting in the effort, time, and bravery needed to make changes and grow.  This is especially true for my clients recovering from traumatic experiences; I hold it as both my privilege and responsibility to bear witness to these experiences and to provide a safe space for healing.

Providing skillful therapy is both a science and an art form.  In order to provide the best care possible, I use research-supported treatments that have been proven to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life.  I strive to maintain knowledge of the current research as well as training in the most effective treatment options.  To determine the best course of treatment, each client participates in a thorough intake evaluation, and, together, we create a treatment plan that is specific to each client's unique needs.  I am trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy, Prolonged Exposure, Gottman Method Couples Therapy, Integrative Behavioral Couple Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and mindfulness-based approaches.

Educational background and professional activities:  I earned a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Ohio State University and focused my dissertation research on the effects of hope on reducing barriers to seeking mental health treatment.  I completed an internship, postdoctoral fellowship, and many years of clinical work at the Portland DBT Institute and Portland VA Medical Center, working primarily on PTSD Recovery teams.  I am licensed to practice psychology in Oregon #2644.

Meet Lu and lu

In my free time, I am often found snuggling one of the two Lus (also known affectionately as "dog" and "cat;" the story of matching names is long but one I am am always happy to share!).  Outside of work, I create meaning in my life by spending time with my wife and kids, in the wilderness, exercising, and desperately trying to improve my not-so-green thumb.  Or sometimes, I just watch Netflix :)
